Some of the earliest recorded instances of ninja, or shinobi, date back to the 15th century. Much combat at the time was fought by samurai, which were held by their strict code of honor and ethics. This hierarchy tended to reflect more on the later, more professional ninja clans, that the modern techniques and depictions tend to have more in common with.
