Whether its gear for ninjas or GI, we’ve got you covered
As with many aspects of history and its depiction in media, the clothing we often see associated with ninja isn’t all that correct. The all-black clothing covering them from head to toe is actually a very old artistic depiction. Taken from stylized theater depictions, the ninja most likely didn’t dress in all black.
When dressed for action, the ninja would often dress in two ways. On style is like their samurai counterparts, in flowing fabric. Unlike the samurai, the ninja would tuck their clothes and use belts to keep their clothing, tools, and weapons secure. The loose clothing was often worn with a tenugui in order to conceal the ninja’s face. The other way that ninjas would dress would be some form of commoner disguise. Usually as a farmer, but sometimes they would take advantage of the ceremonial dress worn by priests and the like to conceal their identity.
One other article of clothing that was sometimes used by ninja was the kusari. The kusari was a chain mail coat, designed to be worn beneath other clothing in order to conceal it. If people didn’t know you were wearing armor, then they would not make assumptions about your intent or prioritize where they will aim for with their spears or arrows.
What we see in modern depictions of ninjas is a gi. Gi are commonly worn by those participating in traditional martial arts training. We offer a wide variety of different gi styles on our ninja site to allow for ease and comfort for our customers who are looking into training as well.
Gi come in two primary styles; The European cut and the Japanese cut. The Japanese cut features short sleeves and trousers to minimize restriction. The Japanese cut also features the longest lapels to prevent the belt, or obi, from riding up during use. The European is different from the Japanese cut with long sleeves and trousers and a shorter lapel, chosen to fit a more aesthetic design rather than a practical one.
Another important factor in the crafting of a gi is the fabric used. One might expect a lighter fabric to be preferable for exercise and training, but actually, the opposite is the case. Firmer, heavier fabrics both encourage more airflow through the whole of the gi and remove more sweat from the body. A firmer gi means your body will remain cooler for longer.
